The Big Float is a celebration of the Willamette River – a parade/float/beach party in downtown Portland.
People gather at Tom McCall Waterfront Park with floating implements and life jackets, then take a ¼-mile parade route to the launch point at Poet’s Beach, and float downstream back to the starting point at Tom McCall Park.
The event features a main stage on land and a river stage for floaters on their voyage downstream.
Tom McCall Park serves as the staging area where folks fill up innertubes, check in valuables, grab food and drinks and line up for the parade.
Throngs of people attend TBF every summer. Over the last nine years, over 20,000 have joined the flotilla. Top attendance was 5,000 in 2018. The demographics include families, kids, and fun-loving adults of all ages (skewing younger and slightly more female).
Since The Big Float is an environmental party with a purpose, our audience tends to respond well to products considered green and eco-friendly.

This year will be our 10TH anniversary! We always get great press leading up to the event, but this year being our 10th anniversary we expect particular attention and a big turnout. We’re back after two years off from Covid.
You can join a great roster of many of Portland’s leading brands such as Subaru, Portland Spirit, Next Adventure, Travel Portland, Popina Swimwear, Point West Credit Union, and others.
The event benefits the Human Access Project (HAP) www.humanaccessproject.com, a volunteer-driven nonprofit dedicated to helping people connect with their river, embrace it, and perhaps even fall in love with it. Imagine that!
Any proceeds from the event support HAP’s mission to Transform Portland’s Relationship with the Willamette River. For instance, our work led to the opening of Poet’s Beach, a public beach spot under the Marquam Bridge that serves as The Big Float’s put-in point. In short, The Big Float is a movement disguised as a party!
